Summary
Botany major with course work and experience in plant ecosystems and biotechnology.

Career Goal
Specialization in biotechnology or genetics.

Rationale: The increasing world population requires the need for better food supplies. With the demand for new drugs and medicines and useful genes for improving crop plants, explorers in botany are essential. I have an interest in how to insert desirable genes into plants and how those genes are subsequently expressed.

Education
My current course of study is in the Plant Science Option in Botany at Hilltop Community College. This will prepare me for continued work in botany at a research university. I am experienced in several computer applications, including Word, Excel, and Access, and currently I am learning FrontPage for Web development.

The Plant Science Option provides an introduction to plant science with courses in biology, botany, plant structure and classification, and ecology, and a solid background in the analytical sciences. This work is preparatory to a summer field practicum with a faculty member from the University of Upper Michigan.

Research and Practicum
This summer, I will participate in a forest resources practicum for five weeks in the upper peninsula of Michigan,
led by Dr. Gregory Fields of the University of Upper Michigan. This practicum is designed to familiarize students with the significance of the primary and secondary wood manufacturing industries, the socio-economic conditions in a forest-dominated region, and industrial forestland management. The program will include facilitated discussions of ecosystems and cooperative learning exercises to introduce basic principles of ecosystems management and to develop a professional ethic. Class members will keep a required field notebook that consists of important points such as the economic and social significance of the activities observed, site conditions, management activities, harvesting operations, and manufacturing processes observed.
